Mediation
Mediation is a structured process between the mediators and all of the stakeholders involved in a dispute.
A mediation session is conducted by one or two trained mediators who assist the stakeholders to:
- Identify the disputed issues
- Develop options to resolve the disputed issues
- Consider alternatives
- Endeavour to reach an agreement.
The mediators control how the session is run and the parties control what is discussed and agreed.
At times in teams and organisations, it is necessary to call in external assistance to mediate disputes that have reached an impasse.
At CfOD, we understand the outcomes of effective mediation and our phased approach delivers an outcome that is not only sustainable but also respects the rights and dignity of all the stakeholders in the mediation process.
Phase 1: Preliminary Conference
This is to establish an 'agree to agree' framework and the terms of engagement for the actual mediation session that will be conducted
Phase 2: Mediation Session
This session is conducted with a clear understanding of the guidelines to mediation signed off by the participants in session 1. The outcome of the session is to gain agreement to a set of protocols that clearly defines actions and responsibilities for both parties. The agreed strategies will be documented and signed by both parties and will form a contract for the future of the workplace relationships.
Phase 3: Report to Line Managers
A confidential report is presented to the Line Manager. The report while respecting confidentiality includes insights and strategies to manage the participants to ensure that the outcome of the mediation is sustainable.
